“ And the third angel followed them, saying with a loud voice, If any man worship the beast and his image, and receive his mark in his forehead, or in his hand, The same shall drink of the wine of the wrath of God, which is poured out without mixture into the cup of his indignation; and he shall be tormented with fire and brimstone in the presence of the holy angels, and in the presence of the Lamb: And the smoke of their torment ascendeth up for ever and ever: and they have no rest day nor night, who worship the beast and his image, and whosoever receiveth the mark of his name. Here is the patience of the saints: here are they that keep the commandments of God, and the faith of Jesus.”
Revelation 14:9-12
The easiest way to understand this is with a timeline, starting with the return of Jesus:
Where all of those who rejected harmony and made it through the plagues and have demonstrated their darkness are consumed by His light.
“And then shall that Wicked be revealed, whom the Lord shall consume with the spirit of his mouth, and shall destroy with the brightness of His coming”
2 Thessalonians 2:8
The bodies of those who died at the brightness of Jesus' Second Coming will be scattered on the ground.
“Wheresoever the body is, thither will the eagles be gathered together.”
Luke 17:37
A gruesome detail is that the birds will feast on the dead bodies of the wicked.
It is a bit poetic that when Christ (the Bridegroom) reunites with His church (the Bride) the marriage supper, the guests are birds and the dinner is the flesh of fallen kings.
“Come and gather yourselves together unto the supper of the great God; That ye may eat the flesh of kings”
Revelation 19:17
Only lucifer and the fallen angels remain on earth alive.
“And I saw an angel come down from heaven, having the key of the bottomless pit and a great chain in his hand.”
Revelation 20:1
The bottomless pit refers to earth:
“That the expression ‘bottomless pit’ represents the earth in a state of confusion and darkness is evident from other scriptures.”
Great Controversy (GC 658.3)
This was prophesied by the prophet Jeremiah:
“I beheld the earth, and, lo, it was without form, and void; and the heavens, and they had no light. I beheld the mountains, and, lo, they trembled, and all the hills moved lightly. I beheld, and, lo, there was no man, and all the birds of the heavens were fled. I beheld, and, lo, the fruitful place was a wilderness, and all the cities thereof were broken down at the presence of the Lord, and by his fierce anger.”
Jeremiah 4:23-26
So the birds who feasted on the fallen wicked bodies are no more, the cities of the earth are flattened and the earth is in a state similar to what it was before the beauty of creation.
The angel with the key and chain of earth imprisons lucifer and the fallen angels:
“And he laid hold on the dragon, that old serpent, which is the devil, and satan, and bound him a thousand years, And cast him into the bottomless pit, and shut him up, and set a seal upon him, that he should deceive the nations no more, till the thousand years should be fulfilled: and after that he must be loosed a little season.”
Revelation 20:2-3
The earth is desolate for 1000 years with only lucifer and his angels left on the earth, forced to keep a 1000 year millennial sabbath.
“Here is to be the home of Satan with his evil angels for a thousand years. Limited to the earth, he will not have access to other worlds to tempt and annoy those who have never fallen. It is in this sense that he is bound: there are none remaining, upon whom he can exercise his power. He is wholly cut off from the work of deception and ruin which for so many centuries has been his sole delight.”
The Great Controversy (GC 659.1)
For 1000 years, Satan will behold the results of his rebellion against the law of God. His sufferings are intense. He is now left to contemplate the part he has acted since he rebelled and to look forward with terror to the dreadful future when he must be punished. ” From Here to Forever (HF 399.2)
He has a thousand years to reflect on the effects which sin has wrought, to behold the results of his rebellion, and to look forward with dread to the time when he will be punished for the evil he has done and the sins he has caused others to commit. At the end of the thousand years (commonly known as the “millennium”) he will be “loosed” for a short time.
“Blessed and holy is he that hath part in the first resurrection: on such the second death hath no power, but they shall be priests of God and of Christ, and shall reign with him a thousand years.”
Revelation 20:6
The saved are with Jesus in Heaven for a thousand years where the records of all are reviewed and the judgements are verified.
“And I saw thrones, and they sat upon them, and judgment was given unto them: and I saw the souls of them that were beheaded for the witness of Jesus, and for the word of God, and which had not worshiped the beast, neither his image, neither had received his mark upon their foreheads, or in their hands; and they lived and reigned with Christ a thousand years.”
Revelation 20:4
“Do ye not know that the saints shall judge the world? and if the world shall be judged by you, are ye unworthy to judge the smallest matters?”
1 Corinthians 6:2
“I then saw the holy city, and that we should rest in the city, through the 1000 years, and reign as kings and priests unto God. Then Jesus will descend upon the Mount of Olives, and the mount will part asunder and become a mighty plain for the Paradise of God to rest upon.”
Letters and Manuscripts (1LtMs, Ms 4, 1850, par. 15)
At the end of the millenium the New Jerusalem will descend to the earth with the saints inside and the city will replace what was previously but down destroyed earthy Jerusalem.
“And I John saw the holy city, new Jerusalem, coming down from God out of heaven, prepared as a bride adorned for her husband. And I heard a great voice out of heaven saying, Behold, the tabernacle of God is with men, and he will dwell with them, and they shall be his people, and God himself shall be with them, and be their God... And he carried me away in the spirit to a great and high mountain, and shewed me that great city, the holy Jerusalem, descending out of heaven from God”
Revelation 21:2-3,10
Once the final court case is over and all agree on the verdict of the dead who choose self over God, the New Jerusalem descends to earth then comes the Second Resurrection.
“And they shall be gathered together, as prisoners are gathered in the pit, and shall be shut up in the prison, and after many days shall they be visited.”
Isaiah 24:22
“But the rest of the dead lived not again until the thousand years were finished.”
Revelation 20:5
“Then Jesus and all the retinue of holy angels, and all the redeemed saints, left the city. The angels surrounded their Commander and escorted Him on His way, and the train of redeemed saints followed. Then, in terrible, fearful majesty, Jesus called forth the wicked dead; and they came up with the same feeble, sickly bodies that went into the grave… And then there arises one long protracted wail of agony, as they flee to hide from the presence of the King of kings and Lord of lords.”
Early Writings (EW 292.1)
After the 1000 years, the wicked are raised but are not given glorified bodies. This means they are raised in the same condition as their death.
All the wicked who have ever lived are now resurrected in “the resurrection of damnation,” and satan is “loosed out of his prison.” After his long incarceration, he now has all his subjects, the vast multitude of the lost, to tempt, deceive and torment.
“And when the thousand years are expired, satan shall be loosed out of his prison, And shall go out to deceive the nations which are in the four quarters of the earth, Gog, and Magog, to gather them together to battle: the number of whom is as the sand of the sea. And they went up on the breadth of the earth, and compassed the camp of the saints about, and the beloved city...”
Revelation 20:7-9
“Then Jesus and the holy angels, accompanied by all the saints, again go to the city, and the bitter lamentations and wailings of the doomed wicked fill the air. Then I saw that satan again commenced his work. He passed around among his subjects, and made the weak and feeble strong, and told them that he and his angels were powerful. He pointed to the countless millions who had been raised. There were mighty warriors and kings who were well skilled in battle and who had conquered kingdoms. And there were mighty giants and valiant men who had never lost a battle. There was the proud, ambitious Napoleon, whose approach had caused kingdoms to tremble. There stood men of lofty stature and dignified bearing, who had fallen in battle while thirsting to conquer. As they come forth from their graves, they resume the current of their thoughts where it ceased in death. They possess the same desire to conquer which ruled when they fell. satan consults with his angels, and then with those kings and conquerors and mighty men. Then he looks over the vast army, and tells them that the company in the city is small and feeble, and that they can go up and take it, and cast out its inhabitants, and possess its riches and glory themselves. satan succeeds in deceiving them, and all immediately begin to prepare themselves for battle. There are many skillful men in that vast army, and they construct all kinds of implements of war. Then with satan at their head, the multitude move on. Kings and warriors follow close after satan, and the multitude follow after in companies. Each company has its leader, and order is observed as they march over the broken surface of the earth to the Holy City. Jesus closes the gates of the city, and this vast army surround it, and place themselves in battle array, expecting a fierce conflict. Jesus and all the angelic host and all the saints, with the glittering crowns upon their heads, ascend to the top of the wall of the city.” Early Writings (EW 293.1)
“Satan succeeds in deceiving them, and all immediately begin to prepare themselves for battle. Jesus and all the angelic host and all the saints, with the glittering crowns upon their heads, ascend to the top of the wall of the city. Jesus speaks with majesty, saying, “Behold, ye sinners, the reward of the just! And behold, My redeemed, the reward of the wicked!” The vast multitude behold the glorious company on the walls of the city. And as they witness the splendor of their glittering crowns and see their faces radiant with glory, reflecting the image of Jesus, and then behold the unsurpassed glory and majesty of the King of kings and Lord of lords, their courage fails. A sense of the treasure and glory which they have lost rushes upon them, and they realize that the wages of sin is death. They see the holy, happy company whom they have despised, clothed with glory, honor, immortality, and eternal life, while they are outside the city with every mean and abominable thing.” Early Writings (EW 293.2)
“There shall be weeping and gnashing of teeth, when ye shall see Abraham, and Isaac, and Jacob, and all the prophets, in the kingdom of God, and you yourselves thrust out.”
Luke 13:28
Then the sentence is executed. “Fire” comes “down from God out of heaven” to devour the wicked, turning the earth’s surface into a vast “lake of fire.” It burns up “the devil,” “the beast,” “the false prophet” and “whosoever was not found written in the book of life,” vs. 15. Sin and the effects of sin are destroyed, including “death” and “hell” (the grave), vs. 14. In the cleansing flames the wicked are annihilated; this is the second death. “Blessed and holy is he that hath part in the first resurrection: on such the second death hath no power,” vs. 6. The fire that consumed the wicked purifies the earth. Every trace of the curse of sin is swept away. The universe is once again free from sin and rebellion.
“...and fire came down from God out of heaven, and devoured them.”
Revelation 20:9
“For our God is a consuming fire.”
Hebrews 12:29
One could imagine that the love of God comes down as an embrace, a consuming fire, which hugs each of the fallen creation until they stop struggling and accept His love and then they are at peace and cease to exist.
A sense of the treasure and glory which they have lost rushes upon them, and they realize that the wages of sin is death. They see the holy, happy company whom they have despised, clothed with glory, honor, immortality, and eternal life, while they are outside the city with every mean and abominable thing.” satan rushes into the midst of his followers and tries to stir up the multitude to action. But fire from God out of heaven is rained upon them, and the great men, and mighty men, the noble, the poor and miserable, are all consumed together. I saw that some were quickly destroyed, while others suffered longer. They were punished according to the deeds done in the body. Some were many days consuming, and just as long as there was a portion of them unconsumed, all the sense of suffering remained. Said the angel, “The worm of life shall not die; their fire shall not be quenched as long as there is the least particle for it to prey upon.” satan and his angels suffered long. satan bore not only the weight and punishment of his own sins, but also of the sins of the redeemed host, which had been placed upon him; and he must also suffer for the ruin of souls which he had caused. Then I saw that satan and all the wicked host were consumed, and the justice of God was satisfied; and all the angelic host, and all the redeemed saints, with a loud voice said, “Amen!” Said the angel, “satan is the root, his children are the branches. They are now consumed root and branch. They have died an everlasting death. ” Early Writings (EW 294.1)
“For, behold, the day cometh, that shall burn as an oven; and all the proud, yea, and all that do wickedly, shall be stubble: and the day that cometh shall burn them up, saith the Lord of hosts, that it shall leave them neither root nor branch.”
Malachi 4:1
“...satan is the root, and his children are the branches. Then the same fire that will devour the wicked will purify the earth. I saw that the feet of the wicked would never desecrate the earth made new.”
Letters and Manuscripts (1LtMs, Ms 4, 1850, par. 15)
It is a "strange act" that God deletes the wicked.
“For the Lord shall rise up as in mount Perazim, he shall be wroth as in the valley of Gibeon, that he may do his work, his strange work; and bring to pass his act, his strange act.”
Isaiah 28:21
“For I have no pleasure in the death of him that dieth, saith the Lord God: wherefore turn yourselves, and live ye.”
Ezekiel 18:32
“Say unto them, As I live, saith the Lord God, I have no pleasure in the death of the wicked; but that the wicked turn from his way and live: turn ye, turn ye from your evil ways; for why will ye die, O house of Israel?”
Ezekiel 33:11
We need only to stop choosing self and accept His gift of Righteousness and live! God wishes that all choose harmony and live!
But so many of God's creation are fighting against Him, embracing self and fighting against harmony. They have no rest day nor night, but God has called us all into His rest!
